Jose Mariano Ocampo’s dream took shape amidst the bustling streets of Manila. His Ocampo Pagoda Mansion, a unique blend of East and West, began its story in 1936. Ocampo, a lawyer and realtor, envisioned a structure inspired by Japanese castles. He admired Japan’s modernization, its ability to stand tall among Western powers. Two Filipino engineers and two Japanese overseers helped bring his vision to life. The Ocampo Pagoda, with its distinctive pagoda-like tower, rose against the Manila skyline just before the Japanese invasion of the Philippines in 1941. Ironically, the Japanese-inspired mansion became a haven during World War II. Its robust reinforced concrete structure shielded neighbors from air raids between Japanese and American planes. The Ocampo Pagoda, though inspired by Japanese architecture, incorporated a fusion of styles. The tower’s base boasted ornate Japanese dormer gables. Above, the tower took on a medieval Western appearance, complete with battlements and crenellations. Pyramidal red-tiled roofs added a splash of color to the Manila skyline. The mansion held a hidden world of symbols. The most prominent was Ocampo’s personal emblem, an owl carved beneath the main gable. The Ocampo Pagoda stands as a testament to Ocampo’s vision. It survived the war but suffered damage from a 1962 earthquake. Today, the mansion and the surrounding area belong to Ocampo’s descendants. The pagoda itself served as a dormitory for seamen for a time. Scattered around the alleys near the pagoda, life-sized religious statues commissioned by the devout Ocampo greet curious visitors. A shachihoko, a mythical Japanese creature, can also be found. The Ocampo Pagoda, a quirky landmark in Manila, invites you to explore its blend of cultures and its unique story.
