Did Objectifs always call this striking building home? No. The Objectifs – Centre for Photography and Film story begins in 2003 on Liang Seah Street. Two Raffles Junior College alumni, Dawn Teo and Emmeline Yong, fueled by their passion for film and photography, left their banking jobs to pursue this dream. They envisioned a space where both emerging and established artists could hone their craft. Objectifs – Centre for Photography and Film started as a hub for photography and filmmaking education. They offered short courses and residencies, filling a gap in Singapore’s art scene. In 2009, Objectifs – Centre for Photography and Film outgrew its original space and moved to Arab Street. Their vision continued to expand, leading them to their current home on Middle Road in 2015. This 8,000 square foot building, a former art space known as Sculpture Square, allows Objectifs – Centre for Photography and Film to offer a wider range of programmes. Over the years, Objectifs – Centre for Photography and Film has championed local talent and broadened perspectives through impactful images. Their Travelling Short Film Project, launched in 2004, has reached thousands of students. The Shooting Home mentorship programme has nurtured countless photographers, culminating in a remarkable 10th-anniversary exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore. Today, the Objectifs Documentary Award continues this legacy, supporting Southeast Asian photographers. Objectifs – Centre for Photography and Film also explores critical issues through their “Stories That Matter” documentary programme and celebrates the contributions of women in the field. Their residency programmes provide valuable resources to artists, and Objectifs Films, launched in 2006, stands as the largest short film distributor in Southeast Asia. The Objectifs Film Library further enriches the local film scene, offering a valuable resource for film enthusiasts and showcasing the diverse talents of Southeast Asian filmmakers. Objectifs – Centre for Photography and Film continues to evolve. From a small shophouse to this expansive building, their dedication to visual storytelling remains a vital part of Singapore’s arts landscape.
