Obervieland, Bremen’s youngest district, didn’t just spring up overnight. It’s a fascinating tapestry woven from the threads of four distinct communities: Arsten, Habenhausen, Kattenesch, and Kattenturm. Established in 1962, Obervieland showcases a blend of rural charm and modern development. Imagine strolling through the “Ur-Zellen,” the original heart of Obervieland, where Arsten and Habenhausen preserve their village-like structures. Contrast this with the high-rise apartments of Kattenturm, a key area in Bremen’s urban renewal program. Obervieland also boasts the Klinikum Links der Weser, the largest employer in the district. This hospital, opened in 1968 and repeatedly expanded, employs 1500 people and houses approximately 450 beds. Its renowned heart laboratory is considered one of the best in Germany. Obervieland also offers a thriving retail scene, generating over 300 million Euros in revenue across 81,000 square meters of retail space. Most of this is concentrated in Habenhausen, particularly in the Werder-Karree shopping center. Another commercial hub is located on Arsterdamm, conveniently situated near the Arsten Autobahnzubringer and Bremen Airport. This area is characterized by small and medium-sized businesses in trade, assembly, and services, along with some larger retailers. Beyond its commercial activity, Obervieland is rich in educational and recreational opportunities. Eight schools cater to diverse learning needs, from primary schools to a gymnasium and an integrated community school. Obervieland also offers excellent recreational areas, such as the Werdersee, Wolfskuhle park, and green spaces along the Krimpelsee. Fast and direct public transport connections, particularly tram lines 4 and 5, link the district to Bremen’s city center in just 20 minutes. While Obervieland enjoys excellent transport links, these major roads, including the Arsten Autobahnzubringer and the Kattenturmer Heerstraße, can also create barriers within the district. Noise pollution from road traffic and the nearby Bremen Airport are ongoing challenges that Obervieland actively works to address. The completion of the A 281 and the planned new Bundesstraße (B6n) towards Brinkum are expected to alleviate some of the traffic burden on Kattenturmer Heerstraße. Obervieland truly has many facets. It’s a place where historic villages meet modern urban planning, creating a unique and dynamic community.
