High above the Elbe River lies Oberloschwitz a captivating neighbourhood in Dresden. Its story is woven into the very fabric of the hillsides. From humble vineyard beginnings Oberloschwitz blossomed into a haven for the wealthy.

Oberloschwitz wasn’t always a residential area. In the 19th century it was primarily a vineyard. The area’s development is intrinsically linked to the nearby spa town of Weißer Hirsch. Both places shared a similar trajectory. The arrival of the phylloxera plague in 1885 devastated the vineyards. This turned prime farmland into desirable building land.

The affluent and aristocratic classes quickly noticed the stunning landscape. They transformed Oberloschwitz. By the end of the 19th century this transformation was complete. The area we see today emerged. Heinrich Warnatz a book dealer played a key role. He bought abandoned vineyards and developed the land. He then divided it into plots for sale.

Oberloschwitz officially gained its name after 1945. Before that it was known as various names like Loschwitz or Schöne Aussicht. The name Oberloschwitz means upper Loschwitz. It simply reflects the higher elevation on the hill. The residents themselves coined the term. They were the ones who had to climb the hill. The Schwebebahn and Standseilbahn funiculars were built to address the challenging terrain. They connect Loschwitz to Oberloschwitz and Weißer Hirsch.

Famous people have called Oberloschwitz home. The author Alma Kriesche a women’s rights activist lived there around 1900. After World War II Friedrich Paulus resided there. He famously commanded the 6th Army during the Battle of Stalingrad. Gunther Emmerlich a well-known singer and television host lived in the Villa Maria until his death in 2023.

Oberloschwitz’s unique blend of history architecture and stunning views makes it unforgettable. It’s a neighbourhood where the past and the present meet. A place where elegant villas stand amidst breathtaking scenery. The charm of Oberloschwitz echoes through its streets and residents. It remains a captivating piece of Dresden’s heritage.
