Atop this imposing structure a beacon shines. This is the Oberfeuer Lemwerder. It stands tall a sentinel guarding the Weser River. For decades this Oberfeuer has guided ships safely through the waters. It’s a modern marvel a testament to engineering. Replacing an older lighthouse this red steel tower with its white band is a vital navigational aid.

The Oberfeuer Lemwerder is more than just a light. It’s a symbol of Lemwerder’s maritime history. The town itself boasts a rich past. For centuries Lemwerder’s people were deeply connected to the sea. Many were part of the whaling and sealing expeditions that ventured as far as Greenland. The Oberfeuer silently witnesses the ebb and flow of the river. It has seen the rise and fall of tides. It has seen the bustling activity of ships.

Construction of this Oberfeuer began in 1983. It replaced a much older lighthouse. This older black iron lattice tower is now a landmark. It’s known as the “Black Lighthouse”. The older lighthouse was built in 1898 at the Bremer Vulkan shipyard. It served as the Oberfeuer for many years. It marked the shipping lane between Elsfleth and Blumenthal. Its white light could be seen for 12 nautical miles. Sadly its 12-meter-high counterpart was removed. The new Oberfeuer is much closer to the riverbank.

Today the Oberfeuer Lemwerder stands as a proud symbol. It continues its vital role ensuring the safe passage of ships along this important waterway. Its bright light a constant companion for sailors navigating the Weser. The Oberfeuer Lemwerder and its predecessor are part of Lemwerder’s legacy. A blend of history and modern technology. It’s a beacon not just for ships but also a symbol of the town’s enduring spirit. It is a testament to its resilience. It is a light that continues to guide and inspire.
