Construction of this Oberfeuer began in 1983. It replaced a much older lighthouse. This older black iron lattice tower is now a landmark. It’s known as the “Black Lighthouse”. The older lighthouse was built in 1898 at the Bremer Vulkan shipyard. It served as the Oberfeuer for many years. It marked the shipping lane between Elsfleth and Blumenthal. Its white light could be seen for 12 nautical miles. Sadly its 12-meter-high counterpart was removed. The new Oberfeuer is much closer to the riverbank.
