Napoleon’s shadow stretches long, doesn’t it? Here at the Obélisque de Mazargues, we stand in that shadow. This obelisk, a towering 23 meters, whispers tales of ambition and shifting allegiances. Originally erected in 1811 in Place Castellane, the Obélisque de Mazargues wasn’t always a Mazargues landmark. It began its life celebrating the birth of Napoleon’s son, the King of Rome. Imagine the fanfare, the pronouncements carved in stone. These inscriptions, dedicated to the heir of a vast empire, would later be altered, masked, and rewritten as the political winds changed. The obelisk bore witness to dedications to the Duc de Bordeaux, the Comte d’Artois, even the July Revolution. Each shift in power, a new name etched, then erased. By 1860, when Napoleon III visited Marseille, the obelisk’s original purpose was almost entirely obscured. The Obélisque de Mazargues stands as a silent testament to these turbulent times. But its journey didn’t end there. In 1911, the city decided to replace it with the Cantini fountain. The obelisk, a massive single block of stone, was moved. It found its new home here in Mazargues, in what was then a sparsely populated area. Some even called it Place de la Concorde, echoing the famous square in Paris. They envisioned the obelisk as a beacon at the end of Marseille’s grandest avenue, a visual anchor against the distant hills. The Obélisque de Mazargues offers a glimpse into a fascinating chapter of Marseille’s history. It’s a story of empires, revolutions, and urban transformations. A story written in stone, relocated, and still standing tall for us to admire today.
