Amidst the vibrant energy of Buenos Aires, the Obelisco stands tall. It’s a beacon of history and a symbol of the city’s enduring spirit. The Obelisco pierces the sky at the intersection of Avenida 9 de Julio, reputedly the world’s widest avenue, and Avenida Corrientes, the bustling street that never sleeps. Erected in 1936, the Obelisco commemorates the 400th anniversary of Buenos Aires’ first founding by Pedro de Mendoza. It also marks the very spot where the Argentine flag first flew in the city.

The Obelisco isn’t just a towering monument. It represents a pivotal moment in Argentine history. The north side inscription tells the tale of the first raising of the national flag at the site of the former St. Nicholas of Bari church. That church, demolished to make way for the Obelisco, held a significant piece of Argentina’s past.

Designed by Alberto Prebisch, the architect behind the iconic Teatro Gran Rex, the Obelisco is a testament to modernist architecture. Standing 67.5 meters tall, each of its sides measures 8.8 meters wide. Its stark, geometric form embodies the spirit of the era. Construction was remarkably swift. A German company completed the project in a mere 31 days, a feat of engineering for its time. Six hundred eighty cubic meters of concrete and over 1300 square meters of white stone from Córdoba brought Prebisch’s vision to life.

A hidden world exists within the Obelisco. A single entrance on the west side leads to a narrow staircase. Two hundred six steps and seven rest stops later, you would reach the top. Four small windows offer a breathtaking, if inaccessible, panoramic view of the city. Atop the structure, a lightning rod silently protects against the elements.

The Obelisco’s story is one of resilience and transformation. Initially met with public disapproval, some even calling it a “meaningless hulk”, it faced calls for demolition shortly after its completion. However, fate intervened, and the city’s mayor vetoed the decision, preserving the monument that would later become a beloved symbol of Buenos Aires. The Obelisco has witnessed countless public gatherings, from joyous celebrations to political demonstrations. It has even been transformed into a giant pink condom for World AIDS Day and a colossal pencil. The Obelisco stands as a silent observer of the city’s unfolding story. It’s a testament to the past and a symbol of the vibrant present. This iconic structure continues to capture hearts and imaginations, reminding us of the power of history, art, and human connection in the heart of Buenos Aires.
