In 1956, a seed was planted in Ilford, the seed of a new Jewish community. This seed grew into the Oaks Lane Reform Synagogue. Originally named S.W. Essex Synagogue, this vibrant hub of Reform Judaism has blossomed over the decades. Oaks Lane Reform Synagogue stands as a testament to the evolving tapestry of Jewish life in London. The congregation’s roots trace back even further, to around 1919, with the establishment of the Oxford & St George’s Settlement Synagogue in Stepney. This connection to the East End’s rich Jewish history adds another layer to the Oaks Lane story. Through mergers and name changes, including a period as the South West Essex Reform Synagogue, the community eventually found its home on Oaks Lane. The current name, adopted in 2023, honors the physical location while retaining the formal, registered name of South West Essex and Settlement Reform Synagogue. The synagogue has witnessed a fascinating procession of rabbis. From Rabbi Alan W. Miller in the late 1950s to Rabbi Jordan Helfman, who joined in 2022, each leader has shaped the community’s spiritual journey. The synagogue is more than just a place of worship. It’s a dynamic center for learning, social connection, and community action. It’s a place where tradition is honored and the future is embraced, a sentiment reflected in their tagline: “Honoring our Past, Building our Future.” Oaks Lane Reform Synagogue continues to thrive as a welcoming space for all, reflecting the inclusive spirit of Reform Judaism.
