Cascading down six meters, Oakley Creek Waterfall beckons you. This isn’t just any waterfall. This is the largest natural waterfall in urban Auckland. It’s also the only natural waterfall on the Auckland isthmus, a hidden gem tucked away in the bustling city. Oakley Creek itself, also known as Te Auaunga, meaning “swirling waters” or “whirlpool”, is one of Auckland’s longest urban streams. It flows from Hillsborough, through several suburbs including Mt Roskill and Waterview, before finally reaching the Waitematā Harbour. The creek holds a rich Māori and European heritage. Its abundance of native and exotic flora and fauna makes it an important natural asset. The Friends of Oakley Creek, established in 2004, are dedicated to protecting and preserving this unique environment. They work tirelessly to improve the water quality and maintain the natural beauty of Oakley Creek and its stunning waterfall. A short, easy stroll along the Oakley Creek Walkway, perhaps starting at Phyllis Reserve, will lead you to this urban oasis. As you approach the waterfall, take a moment to imagine the history that has unfolded along these banks. Tāmaki Māori once gathered here, harvesting eels, crayfish, and weka from the creek. Flax and raupō grew along the banks, providing materials for traditional textiles. They called the wetlands of the creek Te Wai o Rakataura, “The Waters of Rakataura.” The creek was once navigable by waka for much of its length. It served as a vital food and material resource for the local kāinga. The arrival of Europeans in the mid-19th century brought significant changes. In 1845, Edwin Oakley established a flax mill powered by the creek’s waters. Over time, the creek became known as Oakley Creek, or Oakley’s Creek. The once pristine waterway faced challenges as the surrounding area transformed into farms and later, suburban housing. Flooding became a recurring issue, necessitating significant engineering works to manage the flow of the creek. Today, Oakley Creek Waterfall and its surrounding area are a testament to the ongoing efforts to balance urban development with environmental preservation. While a public health warning prevents swimming in the creek, the beauty and tranquility of the waterfall remain. Stand here, at the foot of Oakley Creek Waterfall. Listen to the cascading water. Appreciate this natural wonder amidst the urban landscape, a reminder of the enduring power and beauty of nature.
