Established in 1888 Oakfields Preparatory School stands proudly on Thurlow Park Road. It’s a place where history whispers among the classrooms. For over a century Oakfields has educated children from all walks of life. From its Victorian beginnings as Oakfield Academy educating the daughters of local gentlemen Oakfields evolved. The school initially occupied a villa now housing Years 4-6. Nearby Thurlow Grange a school for young ladies stood on the corner of Croxted Road. It boasted impressive pillars and eagles guarding large gates.

During World War II like many schools Oakfields evacuated its pupils. The threat of bombing forced this difficult decision. This period marked a disruption but not an end. The Old Dulwich High School building formerly an inn later a furniture store and ARP Warden’s depot became part of Oakfields. It housed John Wycliffe School the secondary school division. Sir Laurence Olivier Sir John Gielgud and Sir Ralph Richardson even received training there.
