Remember the year 1891. That’s when the First Congregational Church began right here in Oak Lawn. Now it is known as Oak Lawn Community Church. This church played a vital role in the village’s early growth.
Oak Lawn itself has a rich history. Its story began taking shape in the early 19th century. Several people acquired large sections of land starting in 1835. This land would eventually become the village.
The Potawatomi were forcibly removed from northeastern Illinois. Then the land became available for purchase. Permanent settlers started arriving in the 1840s and 1850s. Back then the area was known as Black Oaks. The Simpsons and Chamberlains were among the earliest families. They significantly impacted the village’s development.
After the Civil War in 1865 a wave of German immigrants arrived. They settled in Black Oaks and surrounding areas. They brought their traditions and beliefs. In 1867 they started Lutheran services. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church became the first organized congregation in Black Oaks seven years later.
Despite a worldwide depression new commercial buildings appeared. The first Brandt Tavern was built along 95th Street during the 1870s. The Wabash Railroad connected Oak Lawn to Chicago in 1881.
By the late 19th century Oak Lawn had only a few hundred residents. But further growth happened with the First Congregational Church’s founding. New small subdivisions were constructed. Oak Lawn Lake was completed.
Oak Lawn continued to develop. Residents gathered in Larsen’s Hall on 95th Street on February 4th 1909. They discussed incorporation. Neighboring communities like Evergreen Park were growing. The need for municipal services became clear. There was also a perceived threat from Chicago’s expansion. Many supported creating a local government. The vote for incorporation passed fifty-nine to four. The Village of Oak Lawn was born.
Frank O’Brien became the first Village Marshall. Concrete sidewalks were laid. 95th Street was graded. Gas and electric service were introduced. A village hall was built near 95th Street and Cook Avenue.
Oak Lawn Community Church stands as a testament to this vibrant history. It reminds us of the community’s roots and the importance of faith. It shows the perseverance of its early settlers. The church continues to be a pillar of strength. It is still a source of unity for the people of Oak Lawn.
