You can’t miss Oak Lawn Bible Church. It stands proudly on the corner of 54th Avenue in Oak Lawn, Illinois. It was founded in 1935 by a group of dedicated individuals. The story of this church is almost unbelievable – a story of resilience, faith, and community. Imagine a time when the Great Depression gripped America, and the idea of building a church seemed like a pipe dream. Yet, this determined group of people, led by Pastor Walter Bach, decided to take a leap of faith. A California resident donated land, but the church was faced with back taxes and assessments. Undeterred, Pastor Bach passed banks to the congregation as a reminder to pray and give. When the banks were returned, the funds were there, and the taxes were paid. That $40 became the seed money for the building fund. The church was built in the midst of this economic hardship. Volunteers donated labor, brick, lumber, and even steel beams. The flagstone and rocks for the designs in the brickwork came from the creek running along the church property. Today, that very creek is no longer visible. But the church stands as a testament to that dedicated group of people who relied on their faith to build a place of worship that has served the community for nearly a century.
