“It gets greater later” is a saying often heard within the walls of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Welcome to Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church. It stands as a beacon of faith in the community. Its story is woven with threads of dedication and perseverance.

In 1867 a church was established in a small Alabama community. It was named Oak Grove Baptist Church. Years later the church was renamed Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Reverend Darby Willis served as its founder and first pastor.

Over the years Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church grew. In 1884 a new church building was erected to accommodate the expanding congregation. The church’s vision remained steadfast. It focused on saving souls and praising God.

In June 1999 Reverend Albert Murdock assumed leadership. He initiated much-needed upgrades. Under his guidance the church transitioned to full-time worship services. Important milestones were reached. The first women were appointed to the Trustee Ministry. They were Mrs. Edmonia D. Borden, Mrs. Gracie S. Bell, and Mrs. Betty Williams. Later Ms. Edna Williams and Mrs. Dorothy Dawson joined.

A permanent marker was erected in the cemetery. Reverend Murdock aspired to build a new edifice. The members agreed. The groundbreaking took place in August 2000. The new edifice was completed in May 2001. The ribbon-cutting ceremony and first worship service were held on June 10 2001.

In 2002 Mrs. Edmonia D. Borden organized the first Golf Tournament. In 2003 it was named in honor of Deacon Charles S. Forman Sr. Mrs. Borden also created the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church Wall of Fame. It is located in the rear hallway.

Reverend Murdock resigned in February 2004. Reverend Hezekiah Young became pastor later that year. The Men’s Club took responsibility for the upkeep of the church cemetery.

Reverend Young resigned in July 2005. The church was without leadership until March 2006.

Reverend Donald J. White became the leader on March 3 2006. His first sermon was on March 5 2006. Several deacons were ordained. They included Joe Jones, Willie Smith, Cleon Smith, Josh Cabil, and Eddie Jones. A Pastor’s Aide Ministry and choir were formed. Pastor White resigned in 2011.

On April 24 2011 Reverend Willie Smith was elected pastor. He was installed on June 19 2011. Under his leadership the mortgage was paid off. The parking lot was paved. Nursing Home and Women’s Ministries were added. Sixteen souls were baptized. Weekly Bible study was established. On October 6 2018 the church website began construction.

On June 29 2019 Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church conducted its first “Bless the Community” Outreach. It took place in the Walmart Shopping Plaza in Demopolis AL. About 35 to 40 people in need were assisted with clothing, shoes, and food.

Today Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church continues to thrive. It is led by Reverend DeWayne Earl Hicks Sr. since he took over the leadership. He is a graduate of Southern Bible Institute with a master’s degree in Theology. He is also the 1st Vice President of the Minister Union in Dallas, Texas.

Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. It demonstrates community. It embodies unwavering dedication. The church is a beacon of hope and love. It is giving praises for the marvelous things God has done.
