Have you ever strolled along a canal lined with colorful houses? Welcome to Nyhavn Copenhagen’s vibrant waterfront. Nyhavn isn’t just a pretty picture. It’s a piece of history. King Christian V ordered its construction between 1670 and 1675. Swedish prisoners of war and Danish soldiers dug the canal. Initially Nyhavn served as a gateway from the sea to Copenhagen’s old city. Ships delivered cargo and fishermen brought their catch. The area was known for sailors beer and unfortunately prostitution.

Nyhavn’s colorful buildings are a key part of its charm. The oldest house number 9 dates back to 1681. Many of these charming buildings have survived for over three centuries. Hans Christian Andersen the famous author lived at Nyhavn for eighteen years. He resided at number 67 for a significant portion of his time there. A plaque marks his former residence.

Things changed for Nyhavn. As ships grew larger Nyhavn’s role in large-scale shipping declined. After World War II land transport took over. Nyhavn became largely deserted. The Nyhavn Society worked to revive the area. In 1977 it was inaugurated as a veteran ship and museum harbor. The quay was pedestrianized in 1980. Today Nyhavn is a bustling square. It is very popular with tourists and locals alike.

Today Nyhavn is home to a number of historical ships. These vessels are a significant part of the area’s maritime heritage. You can see several of these ships including the lightvessel Gedser Rev and the smuggling ship MA-RI. The Memorial Anchor at Nyhavn’s end commemorates Danish sailors and officers who lost their lives during World War II. This poignant monument is a tribute to their sacrifice.

The sunny side of Nyhavn boasts many bars and restaurants. These establishments offer views of the harbor. Nyhavn is a popular starting point for canal tours.
