What if a church could rise from the back of a truck? That’s the curious tale of Nygårdskirken. This isn’t your typical medieval masterpiece. Nygårdskirken’s story begins in the post-World War II boom. Brøndbyøster’s old church, dating back to the Middle Ages, was bursting at the seams. A new church was desperately needed. A plot was chosen by Brøndbyøstervej in the 1950s. An international architecture competition was launched in the 1960s, hoping for a “world church” design. Over 200 proposals poured in from 25 countries. The winning design, a flower-like structure, proved too expensive. Then, a surprising solution emerged. Architect Jens-Erik Jensen proposed a prefabricated wooden church for a fraction of the cost. In the summer of 1966, trucks arrived, carrying Nygårdskirken piece by piece. Within months, it was ready. Initially intended as temporary, the “stavkirke,” as newspapers called it, became a permanent fixture. Named after the nearby Nygård farm by Roskildevej, the name also reflects the Nygårdsparken housing development it serves. Nygårdskirken began as a branch of Brøndbyøster’s old church. It became the heart of the newly formed Nygård Parish in 1979. The church underwent renovations in 1991, receiving white laminate walls and a copper roof. So, the next time you pass Nygårdskirken, remember its unusual journey. It’s a testament to practicality and community, a church that literally bloomed from humble beginnings.
