In 1631, King Christian IV began constructing Nyboder. He envisioned a haven for his naval personnel and their families. Nyboder Mindestuer, a unique museum nestled within Christian IV’s oldest building from 1635, now tells this story. It offers a glimpse into four centuries of Nyboder’s history. Inside Nyboder Mindestuer, you’ll find rooms depicting a Nyboder home from the 1880s. There’s a room showcasing a detailed model of Nyboder as it appeared in 1760. You can even explore exhibits about the local Nyboder police. A newer exhibit, “People, Memories, and Myths,” opened in 2014. This small local museum captures the essence of life in this historic naval district. Originally, Nyboder’s houses were red and white, not the iconic yellow we see today. They were small, around 40 square meters each, with shared kitchens. Despite their size, they were a step up from typical worker housing of the time. Nyboder housed up to 6,000 people in the mid-1700s. Today, around 2,200 people, all with ties to the Danish military, call Nyboder home. This connection between work and private life has defined Nyboder for centuries.
