Doesn’t this building look modern. This is Nuevocentro Shopping. It’s a shopping mall in Montevideo. Nuevocentro Shopping stands at the intersection of Avenida Luis Alberto de Herrera and Artigas Boulevard. The mall is in the Jacinto Vera neighborhood.
Nuevocentro Shopping opened on October 24, 2013. It quickly became one of Montevideo’s most modern shopping centers. The mall spans three levels. It offers a wide range of products and services. You can find almost everything here.
Nuevocentro includes a Geant hypermarket. It also has five state-of-the-art Movie cinema screens. Mundo Cartoon Network provides amusement for kids. Casino Maroñas offers another entertainment option.
Nuevocentro Shopping prides itself on inclusion and diversity. The mall has pioneered initiatives. These help people with disabilities feel welcome. Nuevocentro strives to accommodate everyone. This includes different generations and sexual orientations. Nuevocentro is more than just a commercial space. It is a meeting place for all.
Nuevocentro Shopping is Uruguay’s first pet-friendly shopping center. Special carts allow you to bring your pets inside. La Terraza is on the fourth level. This outdoor area has a great view of the city. It also features an organic garden and food trucks. These enhance the spring and summer experience.
The Nuevocentro Shopping project was presented in 2008. It had the support of then-President Tabaré Vázquez. Municipal approvals came through. Construction began in March 2011. The project took two and a half years. The total investment was 60 million dollars.
Estudio Gómez Platero designed the Nuevocentro Shopping. Ebital and Saceem carried out the construction. The building covers 73,610 square meters. The commercial area is 32,260 square meters. The closed parking area occupies 37,300 square meters. The cinema area covers 4,050 square meters. There is also an open parking area of 2,450 square meters.
Initially, Nuevocentro Shopping had 130 stores. The Geant hypermarket covers 6,500 square meters. It spans three levels. A food court seats 600 people. The parking lot has 1,000 spaces. A family entertainment center occupies 1,000 square meters. The cinema complex features five screens. The facade includes colorful lights and an artificial waterfall.
The name “Nuevocentro” came from a contest in 2009. It was called “Name your New Shopping.” 20,000 entries were submitted. “Nuevocentro” reflected the new commercial offering for Montevideo.
Two 23-story towers stand above Nuevocentro Shopping. They contain 437 apartments. The towers are named Torres Nuevocentro. One tower faces Bulevar Artigas. The other faces Avenida Luis Alberto de Herrera. The towers and the shopping center enhance the area. They add to existing landmarks like the old Government House.
Nuevocentro Shopping expanded in 2019. A third floor added over 8,000 square meters of commercial space. This attracted international brands like Renner and H&M. New parking areas increased capacity by 300 cars.
Prodie S.A. handled the electrical installations. This ensured good lighting. It also ensured proper functioning of escalators, elevators, and air conditioning. The company also installed CCTV, fire systems, and audio systems. They also installed fiber optic cabling.
Nuevocentro Shopping continues to evolve. It adapts to the needs of Montevideo. It offers a modern shopping and entertainment experience.
