Behold the Nuevo Símbolo Universitario Mural. Its vibrant colors seem to pulse with life.

This isn’t just a painting. This is a statement. Created by the renowned David Alfaro Siqueiros between 1952 and 1956 it’s one of three murals adorning the Torre de Rectoría at the UNAM. Siqueiros’s signature diagonal strokes give a powerful feeling of freedom and expansiveness. The mural is on the east side of the tower overlooking the central campus. It’s painted on a unique “vierendel” a space without a wall just windows.

The central image is breathtaking. An eagle and a condor intertwine their forms. These aren’t just birds. They’re symbols. The Mexican eagle and the Andean condor represent the unity of Latin America. They fiercely grip the sun a symbol of truth and knowledge the very essence of the university itself.

But there’s more. Notice the subtle molding. It divides each floor into three parts creating an illusion. The floors seem to stretch upwards seemingly infinite in size. The building’s true dimensions are deceptively masked by Siqueiros’s masterful design.

The Nuevo Símbolo Universitario Mural is more than just art. It’s a powerful expression of national identity. A celebration of knowledge and Latin American unity. It’s a legacy. A vibrant testament to Siqueiros’s artistic genius and his deep commitment to Mexico’s cultural heritage. A visual reminder of the enduring power of art. To inspire. To inform. To unite.
