A beacon of faith and history, Nuestra Señora del Socorro stands proudly in the vibrant heart of Buenos Aires. Let’s embark on a journey back to 1750. A generous resident, Alejandro del Valle, donated land for a church between Suipacha and Juncal streets. This marked the beginning of Nuestra Señora del Socorro. The path to becoming a parish wasn’t easy. In 1769, inheritance disputes prevented it, relegating it to a sub-parish of the Cathedral. Finally, in 1783, Nuestra Señora del Socorro officially became a parish. Its boundaries in 1855 encompassed the Río de la Plata, Charcas Street, Uruguay Street, and bordered Nuestra Señora del Pilar Parish to the north. Sadly, the original structure was demolished in 1854. A new church rose on the same hallowed ground, a testament to the enduring spirit of faith. Nuestra Señora del Socorro has witnessed pivotal moments in Argentine history. General San Martín’s Granaderos a Caballo Regiment attended religious services here. The church also played a tragic role in the romance of Camila O’Gorman and Ladislao Gutiérrez. In 1847, their attempt to flee Buenos Aires ended tragically when they were executed by order of Rosas, a dark chapter etched in the church’s history. The present church, with its neoclassical facade and imposing towers added in 1896, stands as a symbol of resilience and the enduring power of faith. Nuestra Señora del Socorro is a captivating blend of historical significance and spiritual solace, inviting all who enter to connect with the past and present.
