Let’s journey back to 1630. A settler wanted to invigorate Catholicism in Santiago del Estero. He ordered an image of the Immaculate Conception from Brazil. Two statues arrived in Buenos Aires. They were placed on an oxen-pulled cart. After three days the cart stopped near present-day Luján. The oxen refused to move.

Later Ana de Matos moved the image to her ranch. But Nuestra Señora de Luján kept returning to her original spot. This happened repeatedly. The Bishop of Buenos Aires organized a formal transfer.

Pope Pius XI declared her Patroness of Argentina Paraguay and Uruguay in 1930. During the Falklands War in 1982 John Paul II visited. He bestowed upon her the Golden Rose.

The Golden Rose is a special papal gift. It symbolizes honor and blessing. It is blessed anointed and dusted with incense.
