In 1630, a Portuguese rancher dreamt of a shrine to the Virgin Mary. He envisioned it on his estancia in Santiago del Estero, a beacon of faith. He commissioned a terracotta statue of the Immaculate Conception from Brazil. The statue, Our Lady of Lujan, arrived in Buenos Aires without incident. It began its journey by cart to Santiago del Estero. At a rest stop by the Lujan River, something extraordinary happened. The oxen pulling the cart refused to budge. They unloaded the cart, piece by piece, but the oxen remained stubbornly still. Only when the crate containing Our Lady of Lujan was removed did the oxen move again. This was seen as a divine sign. Our Lady of Lujan was meant to stay by the Lujan River, not travel to Santiago del Estero. A small chapel was built near the home of Don Rosendo Oramas. There, Our Lady of Lujan remained for 40 years, becoming a place of veneration. Later, Ana de Matos acquired the statue and moved it to the town of Lujan. Our Lady of Lujan rests today in the magnificent Basilica of Lujan. This neo-Gothic masterpiece, built between 1890 and 1937, is a testament to the enduring faith and devotion inspired by the small, 38 cm tall statue. Its twin 106-meter towers dominate the skyline, visible for miles across the flat pampas. This Basilica, a popular pilgrimage site, draws millions of Catholics annually. Many walk from Buenos Aires, a testament to their devotion to Our Lady of Lujan, Patron Saint of Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. In 1887, Pope Leo XIII honored the statue with a Canonical Coronation. He blessed a golden crown, adorned with diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires, and pearls. Even Pope John Paul II visited the shrine in 1982, bestowing upon Our Lady of Lujan the Golden Rose, a precious papal gift. He celebrated mass in the square before the Basilica. This act underscored the statue’s importance not only to Argentina but to the Catholic world. Our Lady of Lujan began her journey in a simple crate. Now, she resides in a grand basilica, her presence a symbol of faith, miracles, and unwavering devotion.
