“A gift from Mexico,” whispered the wind, rustling through the trees outside Nuestra Señora de la Salud. Here we stand, before a church steeped in history and whispered miracles. Nuestra Señora de la Salud. The name itself evokes a sense of peace and healing. Let’s delve into the fascinating journey of this sacred image. Nuestra Señora de la Salud isn’t originally from the Philippines. It began its life in Mexico as a small, miraculous image of the Virgin Mary. Gifted by the Discalced Carmelite nuns of Mexico to Recoletos missionaries in 1634, it was crafted from ivory and adorned with vibrant stones. These missionaries were embarking on a long and perilous voyage to the Philippines. Imagine the conditions aboard their ship: cramped, humid, and disease-ridden. Many fell ill during the arduous journey. With no doctor on board, the Recoletos fathers turned to prayer, beseeching God before the image of Nuestra Señora de la Salud. Miraculously, many experienced healing after these prayers. It was then, in the midst of the vast ocean, that the image earned its title, “La Salud,” meaning “The Health.” Upon arriving in the Philippines, the image found its first home in the Church of San Juan de Bagumbayan. Later, it was moved to the Church of San Nicolas in Intramuros, Manila. Tragedy struck in 1945, during the Battle of Manila. American bombings devastated the city, including San Nicolas Church. Yet, amidst the destruction, the image of La Salud miraculously survived. The Recoletos fathers, recognizing the divine intervention, moved the image to the San Sebastian Basilica for safekeeping. The image remained hidden from public view for 72 years. Many believed it lost or destroyed. Devotion to La Salud faded into obscurity, her feast day forgotten. But in 2016, the Order of Augustinian Recollects decided to revive the devotion. They wanted to offer hope and comfort to those suffering from illness. Now, at San Nicolas Parish in Quezon City, the image of Nuestra Señora de la Salud is once again venerated. It stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring power of miracles.
