Gazing upon Nuestra Senora De Guia Parish, one can almost hear the echoes of history whispering through its walls. Nuestra Senora De Guia Parish, commonly known as Ermita Church or Ermita Shrine, stands proudly in Manila’s Ermita district. This sacred place holds the oldest Marian image in the Philippines, Nuestra Señora de Guia. The story of Nuestra Senora De Guia Parish begins in 1571. Spanish soldiers under Miguel López de Legazpi discovered a simple shrine made of bamboo, nipa, and molave wood. It housed the image of Our Lady of Guidance. This humble structure evolved into a chapel in 1606, eventually growing into the church we see today. The church’s history is intertwined with natural disasters and conflict. Earthquakes repeatedly damaged the structure. During the British occupation of Manila (1762–1764), the image of Our Lady of Guidance found refuge in Manila Cathedral. A more permanent stone church arose in 1810. The image returned in 1918. World War II brought devastation. The Battle of Manila left Nuestra Senora De Guia Parish in ruins. Miraculously, the image survived, sheltered in a private residence. Reconstruction began in 1947, guided by architect Carlos A. Santos-Viola. The restored church welcomed back the image in 1953. In a heartwarming moment, future senator Jose W. Diokno married Carmen Icasiano at Nuestra Senora De Guia Parish on March 28, 1949. Diokno’s connection to the church ran deep. He was baptized there in 1922. In 2005, Nuestra Senora De Guia Parish received a special honor. Cardinal Gaudencio B. Rosales elevated it to an archdiocesan shrine. The church continues to be a beacon of faith and resilience. The image of Our Lady of Guidance watches over those who seek solace and inspiration within its sacred walls.
