Was it fate or faith that led to the creation of Nuestra Senora De Guadalupe Church? This church stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of San Francisco. It also stands as the vibrant faith of its immigrant communities.

Nuestra Senora De Guadalupe Church has a rich history that begins in 1875. Mexican, Spanish, and Portuguese immigrants founded the congregation. They sought a place to worship and connect with their shared heritage. The first church building was completed in 1880. Sadly, the 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed it. But the community’s spirit remained unbroken.

Rebuilt in 1912, the present Nuestra Senora De Guadalupe Church is a landmark. Architects Frank T Shea and John D Lofquist designed it in the Mission Revival style. It was one of the first churches in the United States built of reinforced concrete. Twin towers grace the facade. They are topped with gilded crosses. These crosses symbolize the unwavering faith of the congregation.

Inside Nuestra Senora De Guadalupe Church, Italian master painter Luigi Brusatori created stunning frescos. Completed in 1916, these Renaissance and Baroque-style paintings adorn the interior. Legend says that the faces of the angels were modeled after children’s choir members.

Nuestra Senora De Guadalupe Church also houses a remarkable organ. The Hook & Hastings organ was built in Boston in 1888. It was moved here in 1912 from the First Unitarian Church. Remarkably, it survived the 1906 earthquake. It is the largest unaltered 19th-century pipe organ in California.

In 1992, Archbishop John R Quinn ordered the closure of Nuestra Senora De Guadalupe Church. The reasons given were a lack of priests and low attendance. But the community rallied to save their beloved church. An application was submitted to declare it a historic monument. After collecting 5,000 signatures and attending numerous hearings, their efforts succeeded. In 1993, the church was designated a city landmark.

For a time, St Mary’s Chinese School occupied the building. In 2013, Nuestra Senora De Guadalupe Church was sold and later purchased by investors. It was transformed into a tech business incubator and event space. The adjacent rectory became co-living spaces. Despite these changes, the building retains its architectural and historical significance.

Even now, the building stands as a reminder of its past. The building has even been used as a filming location for movies like The Princess Diaries and Venom.

In 2024, the property was sold again to an out-of-town investor. The future of Nuestra Senora De Guadalupe Church remains uncertain. But its legacy as a place of worship, community, and cultural heritage endures.
