NTU Administration Building

Amidst the vibrant campus of Nanyang Technological University, stands the NTU Administration Building. It’s a structure steeped in history, a silent witness to the evolution of education in Singapore. The NTU Administration Building wasn’t always the administrative heart of this modern university. It began its life as the library and administration building of Nanyang University, affectionately known as Nantah. Nantah holds a special place in the hearts of the local Chinese community. It was the first Chinese-language university in Southeast Asia, a testament to their dedication to providing tertiary education for Chinese-speaking youth. The university was established in 1955 thanks to the vision of Tan Lark Sye, a prominent Hokkien rubber magnate and philanthropist, and the generosity of the Chinese community, whose contributions, big and small, funded its construction. Designed in the Chinese National style by local architect Ng Keng Siang, the NTU Administration Building showcases a beautiful blend of tradition and modernity. Look closely at the circular eaves tiles (wa dang) and the triangular drip tiles (di shui). They are imprinted with the characters “nan” and “da,” an abbreviation of the university’s name. The side wings of the building, with their exposed brick facades, add to its unique charm. Originally serving as the university library, the building transitioned into the Administration Block in 1966. Today, it houses the Chinese Heritage Centre, a repository of the rich history of Nanyang University and the lives and identity of the Chinese diaspora. Nantah’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. The university faced political scrutiny and student protests, particularly regarding language policies. Despite these tumultuous times, Nantah remained a symbol of perseverance and cultural pride. In 1980, Nanyang University merged with the University of Singapore to form the National University of Singapore. The former Nantah campus then became home to the Nanyang Technological Institute in 1982, which eventually evolved into the present-day Nanyang Technological University. The NTU Administration Building, along with the Memorial and the original Arch (now replicated in the Yunnan Garden), stand as National Monuments. They serve as a poignant reminder of Nantah’s legacy. The NTU Administration Building stands as a symbol of resilience, transformation, and the enduring spirit of education. It bridges the past and the present, embodying the rich history of Nanyang University while serving as a vital part of the thriving Nanyang Technological University.
