Amidst the flowing Rhine, a hidden gem awaits. The NSG Herseler Werth, a Rhine island near Hersel, whispers tales of nature’s resilience. NSG Herseler Werth emerged between 1202 and 1237. A massive influx of Rhine water carved its shape, sweeping away parts of Hersel and the old Roman road between Bonn and Cologne. This island, a sanctuary of life, stretches 1,678.5 meters long and covers 14.8 hectares. Designated as a nature reserve in 1993, NSG Herseler Werth remains untouched by human feet. It stands as the last inaccessible Rhine island in North Rhine-Westphalia. Poplars, planted after World War II, blanket the island. Since its protection, endangered plants and animals, some listed in Germany’s Red List, have flourished. Beneath the tranquil surface, the waters around NSG Herseler Werth hold hidden dangers. A strong current flows between the island and Hersel’s shore. In 2004, this current tragically claimed a young swimmer’s life. Years later, in 2009, a 500-kilogram bomb from World War II was discovered during shore work. Nearby areas were evacuated as experts carefully detonated the bomb. The Herseler Wassersport-Verein 1930 e. V., a canoeing club, operates its boathouse at the southern end of NSG Herseler Werth. The club enjoys the proximity to the island, but respects its protected status. NSG Herseler Werth, a testament to nature’s power and resilience, continues to thrive. It remains a haven for biodiversity, a silent witness to the Rhine’s ever-changing flow.
