In 1977, a seed of medical innovation was planted in Lisbon. This seed was the NOVA Medical School. NOVA Medical School sprouted from a law decree, ready to blossom into a hub of medical education, research, and community engagement. The NOVA Medical School isn’t just a building. It represents a vision. A vision where education, research, and community intertwine. Officially established by decree 481/77, the NOVA Medical School opened its doors to students in the 1977/1978 academic year, as part of the NOVA University of Lisbon. The school’s mission is clear: to prepare exceptional medical professionals. NOVA Medical School strives for internationally competitive research. This includes tackling society’s pressing health problems. The school boasts teaching excellence, particularly in master’s and doctoral programs. It also fosters a collaborative network with other health institutions, both within Universidade Nova de Lisboa and internationally. NOVA Medical School is dedicated to providing high-quality services that improve healthcare delivery and resources, nationally and internationally, especially in Portuguese-speaking countries. Currently, NOVA Medical School has a vibrant student body. It boasts 1656 students in the Integrated Master Degree in Medicine, 98 in the Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, and 575 postgraduate students, guided by 805 professors and researchers. NOVA Medical School has a notably strong teacher-to-student ratio in the clinical years, and their students excel in specialty access exams. Its Clinical Skills Training Centre (NOVA MedSim) and Food Research Laboratory (LIA) stand as testaments to their commitment to cutting-edge education and research. So, as you stand before NOVA Medical School, remember, it is more than bricks and mortar. It is a testament to Portugal’s dedication to a healthier future.
