“Requires Improvement” was the overall outcome of the inspection on March 19, 2024. Notre Dame Roman Catholic Girls’ School stands here on St. George’s Road. It has a rich history and a dedicated mission. Let me share its story with you.

Notre Dame Roman Catholic Girls’ School was founded in 1855 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. These sisters based their spirituality on the teachings of Saint Julie Billiart. They established several schools in the United Kingdom. These included schools in Glasgow, Leeds, Norwich, Plymouth, Sheffield, and Liverpool.

The school has a long tradition of educating girls in south London. For many years, it was a grammar school. That was after World War II until 1977. Notre Dame provided education for girls aged 11 to 18 until 1985. Now, it educates girls from ages 11 to 16.

Over the years, Notre Dame Roman Catholic Girls’ School has seen many changes. In December 2022, the school converted to academy status. Before that, it was a voluntary aided school. Southwark Council administered it. Now, the school is sponsored by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark. It is also sponsored by the South East London Catholic Academy Trust or SELCAT. However, Notre Dame still coordinates with the local authority for admissions.

Several headteachers have guided Notre Dame over the years. Sister Myra Poole and Sister Rosemary O’Callaghan are among them. Sister Rosemary O’Callaghan later became the school chaplain. The current headteacher is Ms. Blon Byrne.

The school has faced challenges. An Ofsted inspection in 2024 resulted in a rating of “Requires Improvement”. The quality of education and leadership were areas needing improvement. However, behaviour, attitudes, and personal development were rated as good.

Notre Dame Roman Catholic Girls’ School has a capacity of 620 pupils. Currently, there are 505 pupils enrolled. The school is a non-selective academy for girls only. A significant percentage of students are eligible for free school meals. As of the last count, 40.4% of pupils are eligible. That equates to 203 students.

Notre Dame has produced notable alumnae. These include novelist Inez Pearn. Also Mary Ney, a senior public servant, and actress Catherine Tate attended this school. Their achievements reflect the school’s commitment to fostering talent.

Despite the challenges, Notre Dame remains a vital part of the community. It continues to uphold its Roman Catholic ethos. The school is part of the ST OSCAR ROMERO CATHOLIC ACADEMY TRUST.

Notre Dame Catholic Girls’ School has adapted to the changing needs of its students. The school continues to provide a supportive environment for young women. It helps them to grow academically and personally. As we stand here, we recognize its enduring legacy. The school’s impact extends far beyond these walls.
