In the heart of Chicago, Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church stands as a testament to the city’s rich history. Notre Dame de Chicago isn’t just a church. It’s a story etched in stone and stained glass. Built between 1889 and 1892, Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church replaced an older church from 1865. The French Canadian architect, Gregoire Vigeant, chose the Romanesque Revival style. He infused the design with French influences. The Greek cross layout, the hipped roofs, the square domes, and the towering cupolas and lantern all speak to this heritage. Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church initially served a large French congregation. As the French community dwindled, the Archdiocese of Chicago entrusted the church to the Fathers of the Blessed Sacrament in 1918. A pivotal moment in the church’s history came in 1926. Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church hosted the International Eucharistic Congress, a testament to its growing importance. Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church carries a special significance. It succeeded St. Louis Church, the very first French church in Chicago. It stands as a powerful symbol of French immigration to the city. Some even call it the best and only surviving French landmark in Chicago. This historical and architectural significance led to its inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. More recently, in 2019, Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church merged with the nearby Holy Family Church. While masses are now held at both locations, Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church remains the primary location for the combined parish.
