Slipping through time, imagine Marseille in 1665. A Roman road, the Via Domitia, stretches between Apt and Sisteron. Here, at the site of the ancient Roman settlement of Alaunium, something miraculous occurs near Notre-Dame des Anges. It started with a healing on August 2nd, the Feast of Our Lady of the Angels. The story goes that a choir of angels was heard singing. This event led to the chapel’s current name, Notre-Dame des Anges, meaning Our Lady of the Angels. Before this miraculous event, the chapel was known as Sainte-Marie d’Aulun, a name derived from the Roman settlement and the local god Alaunius. The original chapel became the crypt of a newer, larger structure built after the angelic event. Franciscan Recollects established a community there to care for the growing shrine. Notre-Dame des Anges was completed around 1674. It underwent significant repairs in the 1750s. Today, Notre-Dame des Anges continues to be a place of pilgrimage. People visit three times a year, seeking miracles and drawn by the enduring story of angelic songs.
