Walter Patton Murphy, a name synonymous with railroad innovation, also had a vision for engineering education. This vision materialized right here at the Northwestern University Technological Institute, often referred to as “Tech”. On March 20, 1939, Murphy’s generous donation of $6.735 million paved the way for this iconic structure. He envisioned a “cooperative education” model, seamlessly blending theoretical knowledge with practical industrial applications. The Northwestern University Technological Institute, completed in 1942, was a marvel of its time. Designed by Holabird & Root, the building’s unique E-shaped structure housed six departments, each occupying a wing. Interestingly, the construction of the Northwestern University Technological Institute necessitated the relocation of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house and the Dearborn Observatory. The original Patten Gymnasium wasn’t as fortunate and had to be demolished. This monumental project solidified Northwestern University’s position as a leader in engineering education.
