Have you ever heard of Northwestern College? It’s a small college tucked away in the heart of Chicago, right on North Lipps Avenue. You might not have heard of it because it was once known as Northwestern University before branching off to become its own separate institution in the 19th century. It was established in 1851 and it’s still standing today, a testament to the founders’ dream of providing a quality education to the students of the Northwest Territory.
It is known for its beautiful campus, a mix of modern and historic architecture. The college boasts a strong faculty, with a diverse range of academic programs, and it’s proud of its dedication to student life, fostering a vibrant and stimulating learning environment. But there was a time when the college wasn’t so sure about its future. That happened in 1933, when the Great Depression hit Chicago hard. Northwestern College, along with countless others found itself struggling to make ends meet. The school had to make tough decisions, cutting salaries and freezing building projects.
The college was even considering merging with the University of Chicago, to try and save money. But in the end, it stayed independent, thanks to a generous gift from the Deering family that allowed the college to weather the storm.
You see, Northwestern College has a history filled with challenges and triumphs, and it’s this spirit of resilience that has helped it thrive for over a century.
