Cruising along Auckland’s Northwestern Busway, have you ever wondered about the history of this vital artery? The Northwestern Busway, a key part of Auckland’s public transport network, represents a significant step forward for the rapidly growing northwestern region. This busway isn’t just a road; it’s a symbol of progress, connecting communities and alleviating traffic congestion. The project began in late July 2021, driven by the need to address the northwest’s burgeoning population. Projections for 2046 predicted 37,000 new houses, 11,000 new jobs, and a near tripling of commuters on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16). The Northwestern Busway emerged as a solution to this impending crisis. The initial phase focused on improvements like new bus stops at the Te Atatū and Lincoln Road interchanges. It also included extending the bus shoulders on SH16. These changes aimed to create a faster, more reliable bus journey, enticing commuters away from their cars. A later stage saw the introduction of the WX1 express service in November 2023. The WX1 provides frequent service between Westgate and the city center, stopping at key interchanges like Lincoln Road and Te Atatū. The busway also fostered the development of a new bus network, with local feeder services connecting to the express routes at the interchanges. This integrated system facilitates seamless travel for passengers, reducing overall journey times. Beyond the immediate improvements, the Northwestern Busway serves as a stepping stone to a larger vision: a rapid transit solution for the northwest. Waka Kotahi is exploring options for a more comprehensive system, potentially a dedicated busway similar to the Northern Busway. This future development underscores the Northwestern Busway’s role as a catalyst for long-term transport solutions in Auckland.
