Remember that first flight from Minneapolis to Chicago in 1927? Northwest Airlines a name synonymous with aviation history started right here. Colonel Lewis W Brittin founded Varney Speed Lines in 1926. It initially carried mail. A crucial connection between Minneapolis and Chicago was established. In 1927 Varney merged with Northwest Airways. The airline’s true beginning was marked by this renaming.

That inaugural passenger flight wasn’t without drama. Charles “Speed” Holman was at the controls. An engine failure forced an emergency landing in Hastings Minnesota. Local car mechanics helped repair the aircraft. The two passengers finally reached Chicago around 230 AM. It’s a testament to the early days of aviation.

Northwest Airlines wasn’t just about connecting cities. It played a vital role during World War II. It transported supplies and personnel to Alaska and the Pacific. After the war it expanded internationally. It was among the first US airlines to offer transpacific flights to Tokyo Japan in 1946.

Northwest Airlines’ contribution to the Soviet Union’s war effort is less known. It secretly transported military aircraft to Alaska and Siberia. These planes were crucial in the fight against Nazi Germany. The airline received numerous awards from the Soviets. Think about the daring flights over harsh Siberian winters.

The jet age brought further expansion. The introduction of the Boeing 707 in 1959 was a major milestone. The iconic Boeing 747 followed in 1970. Northwest Airlines’ Flight 2 from Minneapolis to Seattle marked its first 747 flight. Hundreds of people watched its takeoff at MSP Airport.

Northwest Airlines wasn’t just about speed and size. Its chief meteorologist Dan Sowa pioneered the first clear air turbulence forecasting system. This system is still partially used today. This innovation made air travel safer for everyone. Northwest even sold its data to other airlines.

The airline wasn’t immune to challenges. Mergers bankruptcies and intense competition were constant threats. Yet Northwest Airlines persisted. It introduced the innovative World Perks frequent flyer program in 1981. This program became a standard for the industry.

The year 2008 marked the end of an era. Northwest Airlines merged with Delta Air Lines. Delta acquired Northwest’s huge operating base in Minneapolis. Many of Northwest’s aircraft still fly under the Delta banner today. If you’ve ever flown on an older Delta plane it might have once been part of Northwest.

Northwest Airlines left a lasting mark on Minneapolis and the world of aviation. Its legacy lives on. Remember its humble beginnings its wartime contributions its pioneering spirit. Remember Northwest Airlines.
