Picture this. It’s July 1950. Two women Sisters Roxie Kern and Pauline Nash have a dream. They want to establish a church. A place of worship and community. Thus begins the Northside Church of God in Christ.
Seven members gather for the first service. It’s held at 3:00 pm every Sunday. They pray study the word and celebrate God’s goodness. It’s a humble beginning. The foundation for something much bigger.
The church appoints its first pastor Rev Charles Finley from Zion Illinois in 1951. Growth follows. Rev Lance Martin takes the helm in 1959. The congregation expands. In 1961 the church is officially named Northside Church of God in Christ.
A significant milestone comes shortly after. Northside purchases its first building. No more renting space. This marks a turning point. It’s a symbol of stability and progress.
Over the next few decades several pastors lead Northside. Rev Jack Johnson Rev AG Drane and Rev Sandy L Johnson each leave their mark. Pastor Johnson serves for an incredible 48 years. Under his guidance the church moves to its current location. A testament to his enduring leadership and the church’s continued growth.
Pastor Johnson retires in 2013. Pastor Lamont Sherrill is elected to continue his legacy. The Northside Church of God in Christ continues to thrive. It remains a vibrant part of the community. It welcomes all who seek faith fellowship and a sense of belonging. The church’s journey from a small group of seven to its current state is a powerful testament to faith perseverance and community spirit. It’s a story written in prayer faith and the unwavering dedication of its members over many decades.
