Wonder how a Lutheran group’s building transformed into the Northgate Gospel Chapel. Today we explore a place that has been a Christian meeting spot for over 50 years. Northgate Church stands as a testament to faith and community. It is located at 14330 15th Avenue NE in Seattle.

In October 1949, some brethren began meeting in homes. They were affiliated with the Hope Gospel Hall. They lived in the north end of Seattle. E.K. Bailey and Alex Ainslie were their teachers. By May 1950, they bought a building from a Lutheran group in the Northgate area. They started a Sunday School and reached out to adults in the neighborhood. Northgate Gospel Chapel was established in mid-1950. The Hope brethren fully supported and cooperated with them.

Bob Flint’s, Les Reitz’s, and Bill Hitchman’s families were instrumental in establishing Northgate Church. Frank Fulton and Bernie Salins also helped. Celoa Brown was an original member. Olive Liefeld Ainslie became the first Sunday School teacher. Ray Anderson and Delbert Slattery aided the fledgling assembly too. Lee Miller and Sumner Osborne Sr. were leading brethren. Virgil Holterman, Edwin Wald, Henry Soderlund, Max Johnson, and Bob Hess were also important figures.

By May 1951, the Sunday school had grown. It had more than 100 children. 60 to 75 adults attended the morning preaching service. An addition was built in late 1952. It provided more classroom space. Remodeling in the late 1950s added even more space. In 1996, attendance was about 150 adults and youngsters.

The Northgate Gospel Chapel follows the New Testament scriptural model. Its doctrine and Bible teaching are fundamental. The church welcomes Christians seeking fellowship. It also welcomes those wanting to learn about the Bible and Christian faith.

Services include the Breaking of Bread Service at 9:30 am on Sundays. The Family Bible Hour follows at 11:00 am.
