Northcote Uniting Church wasn’t always here. Before this magnificent building the congregation met in a simpler structure across the street. That building even served as Northcote’s first council chambers and court. It’s a fascinating story of a community growing with its church.
The church wasn’t just a place of worship. It housed a school too. This little school eventually grew into today’s Helen Street Primary School. The church building also expanded several times. More seating was needed to accommodate the growing congregation. The church’s history reflects the growth of Northcote itself.
The church saw changes over time. The spire that once adorned its roof was removed in the 1960s. In 1977 the Methodist Presbyterian and Congregational churches joined to form the Uniting Church of Australia. Northcote Uniting Church became part of this larger national church.
For a period the church building hosted St Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church. Uniting Church services resumed in 1991. Today it’s a vibrant community. They gather for worship and fellowship. They study scripture and pray together.
Sadly Northcote Uniting Church faces challenges today. The roof is damaged and needs repair. The building’s structure is a concern. Despite these difficulties the congregation continues its work.
