Tucked away on Eban Avenue, the Northcote Baptist Church holds a story as warm and inviting as its community. This isn’t just a building of bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith, planted in the heart of Northcote back in 1949. The seeds of this church were sown not in a grand hall, but in the humble home of Joseph and Sarah Thompson at 7 Hillcrest Ave. Imagine their living room, filled with the laughter and chatter of children attending Sunday School. Joseph and Sarah, missionaries recently returned from China after a harrowing escape from the Japanese during World War Two, saw a need in their new community. With the support of local farmers, Mr. and Mrs. Eban, the Sunday school blossomed, quickly outgrowing the Thompson’s home. Northcote Baptist Church was taking root. Fast forward a few years. The church continued to grow, guided by the vision of its first pastor, Rev. Doug Rushbrook who arrived in 1964. Mr. and Mrs. Eban, instrumental in the church’s early days, gifted two sections of their subdivided farm at the end of Sylvia Road. This generous act allowed the church building to be relocated to Sylvia Road in late 1963. The Northcote Baptist Church as we see it today, with its present auditorium, opened its doors on August 5, 1973. It’s important to note that much of the interior, the finishing touches that give this space its unique character, were lovingly crafted by volunteers. Their dedication echoes the spirit of community that defines Northcote Baptist Church. It’s a story of humble beginnings, of resilience and unwavering faith, and of a community coming together to build something truly special. Northcote Baptist Church continues to stand as a beacon of hope, a testament to the enduring power of faith in the Northcote community.
