Is it possible for a shopping centre to house a treasure trove of art? At NorthArt, in Auckland’s Northcote Shopping Centre, the answer is a resounding yes. NorthArt isn’t just an art gallery; it’s a portal to New Zealand’s contemporary art history. Nestled amidst bustling shops and the aroma of Asian cuisine, this unassuming space holds a collection of over 500 pieces. These pieces were once the prized possessions of renowned art collector Warwick Brown and his wife, Kitty. NorthArt has been a significant part of Brown’s life. He has given talks, curated shows, lent artwork, judged art awards, and even held his own exhibitions within its walls. In a special exhibition titled “Family Reunion,” 32 paintings from the Brown collection were displayed at NorthArt. The exhibition’s name was a nod to the fact that for many years, the vast collection was distributed amongst family members, offices, and storage facilities. The Browns began collecting in the mid-1960s, rarely spending more than $400 on pieces. Their collection includes works by prominent New Zealand artists such as Colin McCahon, Bill Hammond, Dick Frizzell, and many others. One captivating anecdote revolves around a Tony Fomison painting Brown purchased in 1978. This purchase saved Fomison from eviction, a testament to the impact Brown had on the lives of artists. Another story involves a Philip Trusttum abstract, a gift for Kitty, which Brown didn’t realize depicted two figures until it was hanging on their wall. NorthArt itself is more than just a venue for established artists. It represents Wendy Harsant’s vision, who served as the gallery director for over two decades. Harsant aimed to bridge the gap between the North Shore and Auckland City’s art scenes, creating a space for local artists and art enthusiasts to connect. She curated diverse exhibitions, ranging from solo shows to retrospectives and student exhibitions, reflecting the changing demographics of the North Shore. NorthArt has hosted exhibitions featuring Māori, Korean, Pasifika, and Chinese artists, demonstrating its commitment to inclusivity and community engagement. So, as you stand before NorthArt, remember, you’re not just entering a gallery. You’re stepping into a living narrative of New Zealand’s art history, a story woven with passion, dedication, and a touch of the unexpected.
