North Sound Church was formerly the First Baptist Church building. It is the 19th addition to the Edmonds Register of Historic Places. The building was built in 1909. It was at the corner of Sixth and Edmonds Street. It served as a house of worship. It also served as a community hub. This was for the young City of Edmonds. In 1929 the building moved to its current location. That’s at Fourth and Bell. It has continued its service to the present day.
Generations of Edmonds citizens have been associated with North Sound Church. They have been active in it. Alice Kerr was prominent among these citizens. She was the first woman mayor of Edmonds. Kerr became assistant church clerk in 1919. Eventually she rose to represent the church at the state level. She was elected mayor in 1924. Kerr waged an energetic campaign against moral laxity. She fought the tide of illegal liquor. It flooded Edmonds during Prohibition. Kerr continued her association with the church throughout her life. Her funeral services were held in this building in 1949. James Kerr was her grandson. He was also associated with the church. He became Edmonds’ first casualty of World War II. He lost his life in action in the Philippines. This was just days after Pearl Harbor.
Pastor Crane said they are honored. They are blessed to be part of this community. He said it is their heritage. This designation ensures that this piece of their shared heritage will remain. It will remain for future generations.
