Established in 1933, the North Side Gospel Center has witnessed countless stories unfold within its walls. A man named Lance “Doc” Latham, a figure brimming with passion and an unwavering devotion to the scriptures, laid the foundation of this very center. He wasn’t a traditionally trained theologian. He was a man with a master’s degree in biochemistry from Haverford College. He held a deep love for the Bible, studying it diligently each morning since the age of seven. He had memorized three books of the Bible by that young age. His dedication to the word led him to establish the North Side Gospel Center, a place where the community could come together in faith. “Doc” Latham poured his heart into this center for 40 years, serving as pastor until his retirement in 1972. His legacy extends far beyond these walls. Latham also founded the Awana Youth Association. This Christian club for children and teenagers started right here at the North Side Gospel Center in 1941. Latham collaborated with the church’s youth director, Art Rorheim, with the goal of creating a welcoming space for all kids, regardless of their church background. They wanted to foster a love for Christ and nurture their faith through engaging activities and Bible study. From humble beginnings at the North Side Gospel Center, Awana has grown into an international organization, with thousands of clubs worldwide. Latham’s vision continues to impact young lives across the globe. He also established Camp Awana in Fredonia, Wisconsin, a testament to his dedication to youth ministry. This camp provides a space for young people to connect with nature and deepen their faith. Even after retiring from the North Side Gospel Center, Latham’s passion for sharing the Gospel never waned. He continued to preach, teach Sunday school, and study the Bible until just a few months before his passing in 1985. His services were held right here, a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to this community and the message of faith. The North Side Gospel Center stands as a testament to his enduring legacy.
