“Have you noted a prominent totem pole at Awataha Marae on Akoranga Drive?” This question might spark your curiosity about the North Shore Totem Sculpture. It is more than just a sculpture. It is a story carved in wood. It links two cultures and commemorates twin roots.

The North Shore Totem Sculpture connects Māori and Canadian First Nations. Canadian First Nations carver Tim Paul created this link. Paul is a descendant of Māori and First Nations partnerships. A century ago Māori visitors traveled to Canada. They returned to Aotearoa with partners from Canada.

Three Māori men visited Tim Paul’s grandfather in Canada. They stayed for three years. When the trade winds returned, each man went home with a wife from Paul’s family. The North Shore Totem Sculpture tells this story.

The Kiwa exhibition in Vancouver also displayed Paul’s carving. Kiwa raised surprising stories. It attracted collectors from as far as Hawaii. Nigel Reading, the Spirit Wrestler curator, initiated the idea. Representatives of Māori and Northwest Coast Salish tribes arranged mutual visits. More than 80 pieces of Māori art were shipped to Vancouver. Queues formed before the opening. Three-quarters of the work sold on the first day.

Whakapapa reinforces the First Nations link. There are canoe traditions and similar rituals. The tribes felt like cousins. The art communicates between two countries. They are still reconciling colonial sins.

The North Shore Totem Sculpture stands as a symbol of this connection. It reminds us of shared histories. It speaks of intertwined destinies. It embodies the spirit of partnership. It reflects the enduring legacy of cultural exchange. The North Shore Totem Sculpture is not just art. It is a living narrative. It connects us to the past. It inspires us for the future.
