Open since 1971 the North Regional Library stands proudly in north Minneapolis. It’s a vibrant hub for the community a place where stories unfold and knowledge thrives. This wasn’t always the case though. Before this impressive two-story building existed. North Minneapolis residents relied on a library housed in North High School. Later the North Branch Library at 1834 Emerson Avenue North served the area for many decades. The need for a larger more dedicated space however became clear. The city recognized this need. By 1964 plans for a new regional library were underway. The library board saw the potential to serve some of the city’s poorest households. After selecting a location on Lowry Avenue the Minneapolis architectural firm Miller Dunwiddie designed the building.

The grand opening on October 24 1971 was a significant event. Twenty-five thousand leaflets were distributed inviting residents to explore their new library. It was a bold vision a symbol of progress and opportunity. Ervin J Gaines the Minneapolis Public Library director envisioned a citywide network of regional libraries. North Regional was the first of its kind. Sadly a planned south regional library never materialized.

Inside the North Regional Library a special room existed the Emerson Room. It housed a remarkable collection of 500 books on New England literature donated by J Harold Kittleson. The room was designed to evoke the atmosphere of a 19th-century New England home. First editions by literary giants like Emily Dickinson and Ralph Waldo Emerson graced the shelves. This unique collection is now housed at Minneapolis Central’s Special Collections.

Over the years North Regional Library underwent significant renovations. The 2007 remodel focused on accessibility technology upgrades and a more welcoming environment. The library’s leaders collaborated with the neighborhood advisory committee for over a year to ensure the renovations reflected community needs. This collaboration resulted in a space that prioritized the importance of nature and discovery.

A further $9 million renovation in 2020 added study rooms a large meeting room and a dedicated computer work area. The children’s and teen areas were also enhanced with new seating and play spaces. Outdoor improvements included a reading area and a children’s garden. The North Regional Library continues to serve as a beacon of knowledge and community engagement in north Minneapolis. It’s a place where stories continue to unfold. It’s a testament to the power of community and the enduring importance of libraries.
