North Oaks Neighborhood Park lacked the amenities to truly engage the community. Park adopter Sarah Martin described it as insufficient to hold children’s attention. It was simply a hot spot with limited play options. Then came a transformation. The Austin Parks Foundation stepped in securing significant funding from St David’s Foundation. Over $360,000 was invested in North Oaks Neighborhood Park. This included funds from the Austin Parks Foundation and a City of Austin Urban Forestry Grant. The project wasn’t just about new equipment. Community input was vital. Meetings were held. Surveys were conducted. Local residents voiced their needs and preferences. They wanted safer spaces age-appropriate structures more swings and slides. They desired natural play elements seating for parents and well-dispersed amenities to make the most of the open area. Construction began in late September 2019. By December the renovations were complete. The once-bare space now boasts three unique play areas. Sarah Martin now calls it awesome. The park is no longer a ghost town. It’s a hub of activity. Birthday parties neighborhood events and homeowner association gatherings now fill the calendar. But the story doesn’t end there. The North East Walnut Creek Neighborhood Association NEWCNA adopted the park. They even added a community garden. North Oaks Neighborhood Park became a catalyst for community engagement fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose. The success of the park improvement project demonstrates what can happen when community collaboration and thoughtful investment combine.
