Perhaps you’ve heard of Kuta. Did you know North Kuta is its own district? It is north of Kuta District. North Kuta is west of Denpasar city. This area in Bali has a unique story.

North Kuta covers 33.86 square kilometers. In 2010, its population was 103775. It saw rapid growth before 2010. Fields became suburban areas. By 2020, the population decreased slightly to 95189.

North Kuta includes six villages. These are called desa or kelurahan. Canggu’s area is 26.4. Its 2010 population was 17378. In 2020, it was 16796. Kerobokan has an area of 5.42 square kilometers. Its population was 13815 in 2010. By 2020, it had grown to 11488. Kerobokan Kaja covers 5.30 square kilometers. In 2010, 21414 people lived there. The 2020 Census showed 20765 residents. Kerobokan Kelod is 5.26 square kilometers. Its population decreased from 16804 in 2010 to 11119 in 2020. Tibubeneng covers 6.50 square kilometers. It had 14366 residents in 2010. That grew to 12876 by 2020. Dalung’s area is 6.16 square kilometers. Its population increased from 30228 in 2010 to 32145 in 2020.

Kuta started as a small fishing village. It gained popularity in the 1930s. Western visitors loved Kuta Beach. In the 1960s, Kuta became a surfer’s paradise. Waves were good. Hotels and shops opened in the 1970s. Tourism kept growing.

In 2002, tragedy struck Kuta. Terrorists bombed Paddy’s Pub and the Sari Club. The bombings killed 202 people. Many were injured. A memorial now stands on Legian Street. It honors the victims of the Bali bombings. The memorial lists names and nationalities. Flags of the victims’ countries surround it.

Kuta Beach is also known as Sunset Beach. Sanur Beach is called Sunrise Beach. Luxury resorts line Kuta Beach. Restaurants and clubs offer entertainment. A white sandstone fence was built in 2011. It keeps sand off the road. It also reduces traffic noise. Vendors cannot sell food on the beach. They can still sell drinks and souvenirs. During monsoon season, trash washes ashore. Locals and tourists help clean it up.

Kuta attracts many Australian tourists. It is close to the airport. Surfers enjoy the consistent waves at Kuta Beach.
