Ever wondered what a $200 million mall makeover looks like? Right here at North East Mall, you’re standing on the site of a transformation so epic, it involved four new parking garages! North East Mall started as a humble Leonard’s department store in 1970. It quickly blossomed, adding a small mall with 80 stores just a year later. This included the local Stripling’s and a JCPenney, bringing the mall’s footprint to 750,000 square feet. North East Mall kept growing. Sears and Montgomery Ward joined the party in 1978, along with a United Artists Cinema 6 and twenty additional stores. By 1990, a food court replaced the old Service Merchandise, expanding the mall to 1.3 million square feet and boasting 106 inline stores. But the real game-changer came in 1999. That $200 million renovation not only added a sleek new South Wing with 28 stores but also birthed “The Shops at North East Mall,” a 385,000-square-foot power center. And yes, those four parking garages? They arrived during this time too. The revamped North East Mall celebrated its grand re-opening in 2001. It was now a retail giant, spanning 1,749,000 square feet and housing 168 stores and services. This made it the second-largest enclosed mall in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, second only to Houston’s Galleria. While Saks Fifth Avenue graced North East Mall for a time, they closed their doors in 2006. More recently, JCPenney got its own makeover in 2019, further solidifying North East Mall’s commitment to keeping things fresh and exciting. Today, North East Mall continues to be a shopping destination, a testament to its ability to evolve and adapt over the years.
