The North Central Texas Council of Governments or NCTCOG helps governments recognize regional opportunities. It eliminates unnecessary duplication. It also helps them make joint decisions.

NCTCOG’s ranks include many members as of 2023. These are 16 counties. There are 169 cities, towns, and villages. Also included are 19 school districts. Furthermore, there are 24 special districts.

Based in Arlington, NCTCOG is a member of two associations. These are the Texas Association of Regional Councils. Also the Texas Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations.

The North Central Texas Council of Governments was formed in January 1966. It serves a region of 12800 square miles.

The purpose of the North Central Texas Council of Governments is significant. It strengthens the power of local governments. It helps them recognize regional opportunities. It also eliminates unnecessary duplication. This allows them to make joint decisions. NCTCOG has no regulatory or taxing authority. Political subdivisions are not required to become members.

Each member government appoints a representative. They come from its governing body. They attend the COG General Assembly. This group meets annually. They elect the Executive Board. The Executive Board makes policies for all NCTCOG activities. It is composed of 18 officials.

They include study and policy development committees. A professional staff supports the Board. Mike Eastland is the Executive Director.

Emergency preparedness is another aspect. They also deal with demographic research. Regional training is offered. Criminal justice is addressed. They handle 911 emergency numbers. A regional police academy is part of it.
