Have you ever wondered what it takes for a community to rally together, especially in the face of adversity? Look at the North Berwyn Congregational Church. It’s not just a beautiful building, it’s a testament to the unwavering spirit of its people. The North Berwyn Congregational Church, established in 1898, started as a small gathering of Swedish Mission Friends in Old Main on the North Park University campus. Imagine a small group, just 17 charter members strong, coming together with a shared dream – to build a place of worship. Their dream took root in 1912 when the first church building was erected on the corner of Christiana and Berwyn, costing a then-whopping $12,226. The North Berwyn Congregational Church, a beacon of faith and community, quickly became a cornerstone of the neighborhood. By 1929, the congregation had outgrown its original space. They decided to build a new, larger sanctuary, laying the cornerstone in September of that year. Then, the unexpected happened. The stock market crashed just a month later, plunging the world into the Great Depression. Yet, the congregation of the North Berwyn Congregational Church remained undeterred. Even as the economic crisis gripped the nation, they refused to abandon their dream. They demonstrated extraordinary resilience by taking out second mortgages on their homes to fund the construction. Their sacrifice paid off. In April 1930, in the heart of the Great Depression, the new North Berwyn Congregational Church was dedicated. The church stands today as a symbol of resilience, a testament to what a community can achieve when united by faith and a common goal.
