The rhythmic clatter of train wheels once echoed near this very spot. Can you imagine the steam and soot? That was the daily reality for students at Jagtvejens Skole. This is Nørrebro Park Skole. Its story begins in 1888.
Nørrebro Park Skole wasn’t always known by that name. It started life as Jagtvejens Skole. Designed by the prolific city architect Ludvig Fenger it opened its doors in 1888. Fenger designed fourteen Copenhagen schools. This was his first. The school boasts a rich history. It was built on land that was previously part of Assistens Cemetery. This was the very section used during the cholera epidemic of 1853.
Jagtvejens Skole was a modern building for its time. It featured spacious bright classrooms. The school grounds were even divided into sections for boys and girls. A cutting-edge heating system circulated warm air from the boiler room. Cold air was sucked out through floor vents. This system however had a drawback. The nearby railway line which operated until 1930 spewed steam and smoke directly over the school.
For the first twenty years the school was neighbored by workers’ allotment gardens. These gardens were removed in 1908 to make way for Hans Tavsens Park.
In 1915 the school became a public school. Free education was introduced eliminating the distinction between fee-paying and free schools. During World War II the school’s use changed dramatically. It was occupied by the Danish police in 1944. The Germans later took it over using it to house refugees. The students had to attend other schools. The school was only fully returned to its original purpose in 1946.
Nørrebro Park Skole is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to Copenhagen’s evolution. It’s a place where generations of children have learned and played. The school has undergone several renovations and extensions. In 2008 Jagtvejens Skole merged with Havremarkens Skole. The resulting school is the Nørrebro Park Skole we see today. A place that continues to educate and inspire young minds amidst the changing landscape of Nørrebro.
