How thirsty must the earth be to demand such ingenuity? This, my friends, is the Noria de los Peña. It stands as a testament to the island’s history and the resourcefulness of its people. Imagine a time when Fuerteventura’s landscape was even drier. Water, a precious commodity, was scarce. The Noria de Los Peña, you see, wasn’t just a tool. It was a lifeline.

The Noria de los Peña, also known as the Noria de la Calle, is a restored “noria de tiro.” These animal-powered wells were once the lifeblood of Fuerteventura’s agriculture. Imagine camels and donkeys, their eyes blindfolded to prevent dizziness, circling endlessly, drawing water from deep within the earth. This water, my friends, would then breathe life into the parched fields.

The Noria de Los Peña is a marvel of engineering. It features two iron reels and an impressive water extraction capacity. With each full rotation, it could draw up to 105 liters! Its 15 clay pots, each holding seven liters, stand as a testament to generations of farmers’ resilience and skill. These “norias de sangre” as they were also called, served Fuerteventura for over a century. Their reign ended only with the arrival of the Chicago Aeromotor windmills.

But the legacy of these structures lives on. The Noria de los Peña reminds us that even in the face of adversity, human ingenuity, coupled with a little donkey power, can make the impossible, possible. It stands as a silent sentinel of a bygone era, whispering tales of hardship, innovation, and the enduring spirit of Fuerteventura.
